I need to stop starting every post with things like ‘OMG How is it October when it was basically June last week.’ Yes, I’m a bit freaked out that the leaves are turning golden, the nights are getting longer and all of a sudden we seem to be hurtling towards the end of the year. Not to mention that I lost the notebook with my 2016 goals and still haven’t managed to start that bullet journal…
Well for this month, I’m going to treat myself a little. Not in the ‘Let’s buy a Gucci bag’ kind of way but the manageable sort that you can justify throughout the week. Let’s face it, it’ll be time to think of the festive C word soon and I want to sort myself out before life starts becoming about Secret Santas and sparkly jumpers again. Being self-employed, I often find that my home seems more like a place of work rather than somewhere to rest and relax, so I see this month as a chance to catch up on cosiness and give myself a pat on the back. These are some of my resolutions for October and I’m thinking that if I start now, January will be a doddle, right?
So Fresh And So Clean
As you can probably tell, my bedtime routine is a bit all over the place. I’m a bit of a shower convert these days, so even though I can go from computer to bed-ready within 10 minutes, my whole winding down thing probably needs some work. It’s tricky as sometimes I’ll get some of my best ideas whilst washing, but it’s also important to use those few minutes as a chance to chill out.
A couple of products I’ve been using to help things along are some of the Palmolive Gourmet Body Butter Shower Creams, making a quick shower into more of a multi-sensorial experience. Who doesn’t want to smell a bit like a dessert before bedtime? The Chocolate Passion ‘flavour’ has to be a fave not only for the scent (you won’t want to stop sniffing the bottle, think chocolate with a touch of caramel), but the fact that there are cocoa extracts that moisturise and nourish the skin. It’s great if I’m in a rush but still want to feel pampered, as it leaves my skin super-smooth thanks to the rich texture. There’s also the Vanilla Pleasure and Strawberry Touch flavours, if you fancy adding even more sweet-smelling variety.
In an ideal world I’d be phone free afterwards and practicing a bit of mindfulness, but I’m all about a halfway point. The slippers are on, my favourite candle is burning and I may even attempt one of those fancy sheet masks. My phone is always in Night Mode from about 10pm onwards, which changes the colours of the screen slightly so it’s easier on the eyes (head to Display & Brightness to switch things up) plus I try and keep a notebook by the bed to jot down any random ideas that may arise. In terms of beauty, I’m turning my room into a bit of a makeshift spa with a new rosehip oil on my face as a bit of an overnight treatment plus a spritz of my favourite lavender pillow spray. I’ve also switched to my brushed cotton duvet set, which makes it rather tricky to get up in the morning…
Be more Bookworm
What happened to the girl who could tackle Harry Potter within 9 hours? I’ve really let my reading slip over the years and I blame my short, social-media addicted attention span. Does anyone else have about 9 tabs constantly open, start reading a random listicle before thinking ‘Let me reply to Mum’s text’. Five minutes later you’re watering the plants and have no idea what you were meant to be doing in the first place.
I still love books. I couldn’t put down Girl On The Train, was obsessed with Big Magic over Christmas and know I’m onto a good thing with Ctrl Alt Delete. I still haven’t finished the latter though, purely because of the aforementioned mismanagement of downtime and being distracted by screens. This needs to stop.
I’m not quite sure how it’s going to happen, but I want to try and read four new books this month. Perhaps it’s a case of bringing one along on the Tube, instead of just refreshing Twitter or curling up on the sofa for a change of scenery. So far I’ve got Americanah, Pivot and Hygge on my list, which will no doubt spark off new thoughts and ideas. I’ll let you know how I get on!
So this is a tricky one for me. I’m still a bit of a disorganised freelancer and don’t really know when my working day ends and my downtime begins. Usually I end up mixing the two, so that must-see episode of First Dates gets wedged in between photo editing and replying to emails, leading to a bit of a fuzzy brain.
The dream for me is to do be as efficient as possible within normal working hours, so that I can switch off more in the evenings and really feel like I’ve earned those few hours of binge-watching. It’s also important to remember that we make progress in increments, so it’s not about eventually rewarding yourself when you’ve got the skills of Arianna Huffington, but recognising each step along the way. Even if you manage to tick one new thing off your to-do list every week, then that deserves a treat! I’m thinking a slice of chocolate cake or a manicure at a certain place that’s all over Instagram.
Is anyone else switching things up for Autumn? Maybe I’ve been watching too many episodes of GBBO, I want to start baking and making casseroles all of a sudden!
Thanks to Palmolive Gourmet for working with me on this post!
