August WYD??? I knew that our British Summers could be a little temperamental, but torrential rain during my birthday month? Fortunately I predicted that this would happen and decided to plan a girly getaway to Budapest for the big 3-0. I’ve not been away for my special day in ages and just wanted a solution to all those ‘What are you doing for your birthday?’ questions. August 17th seems to fill me with even more dread as the years progress and even though I’ve had plenty of reassuring messages saying things like ‘It’s totally fine that you don’t have a hubby, kids and a house full of Jo Malone products’, it’s still a little strange. Despite my doubts, I’m going to start this new decade as I mean to go on with sun, good food and exploring a new city.
So what’s my present to you? Lots of thought-provoking links of course! It seems like so many bloggers are branching out into podcasting and it’s interesting to hear another side to those you may have been reading for years. Let’s Discuss by Monica & Ella is particularly interesting, I now want to get this book by Gretchen Rubin to see if I can try and rid myself of bad habits and they’ve also interviewed the rather inspiring founder of Chloe Digital. I’ve also enjoyed Hayley’s Made Online, especially since she interviews Jane of British Beauty Blogger, who reveals her usual insights gained by years in the industry. Did you know that there’s a reason why bloggers from a specific agency will get all the work?
One article that struck a chord is this one about the portrayal of black women in reality tv shows. It’s the reason why I can’t wholeheartedly get behind shows such as Love Island and even Take Me Out and the quote that sums it up is, ‘It’s not the fruit, it’s the root.’ Grace also wrote about the lack of diversity in blogging and mentions that it’s a reflection of the world we live in. I have no idea how to solve it, but discussion and shedding light on it is a good start.
