In Collaboration With Acuvue
One thing you probably don’t know about me is that I’m rather short sighted. Every time someone tells me ‘OMG I’m so blind’, I just reply with my -7.50 prescription and watch their facial expression change. Back when I was six, my complicated relationship with eyewear began. I vaguely remember having an eye test, being told that I needed to wear glasses for school and then losing them somewhere between the playground and the tray under my desk (it still bugs me to this day).
Gradually I had to start wearing glasses more and they reluctantly became a part of my look. Occasionally I’d show friends at school my ‘real’ face and they’d say something like ‘Wow, you look so different’, which I’d no doubt interpreted ‘You look prettier.’ I counted down the days until my Mum would let me get contact lenses and was convinced that I’d walk back into 6th form a new woman. Surely all my confidence issues would disappear overnight and my life would change?
Don’t worry, this post is not necessarily going to be about how ‘Contact lenses made me beautiful.’ To cut a long story short, trying them out was the start of a long journey that helped me feel more confident whether I’m wearing them or not. I found it easier to apply makeup, got to understand my facial features and eventually realised that cat-eye frames suited my personality perfectly.
As part of my collaboration with Acuvue, I’m going to chat about a few key moments, the bad habits I’m trying to change and how the ACUVUE OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses 1-Day with HydraLuxe™ Technology work. There are some situations in which I prefer the ease of them and others where I’ll wear my specs as a style statement instead. It’s all about having options and I couldn’t be happier with my situation now.
So what was my first ever fitting like? Well when I went for my first ever appointment at 16, I was desperate for contact lenses to work. What I didn’t expect was that my eyes would have some sort of weird reflex action and it would take me almost two weeks to even touch my cornea. Oh dear. I’d put so much pressure on myself and tears were even involved. Not being able to touch my eye was basically the end of the world and I’d remain single forever.
Everyone has their own technique for putting in lenses and after some straight talking from the optician, I realised that I’d have to come up with a different solution. Gradually I built up my confidence each day, figured out my perfect method (it’s a combination that involves me only sliding one eyelid down) and unveiled myself at school as a new Kristabel.
I’ve been wearing monthly lenses for a while, but I must admit that I’d become a little lazy. I was doing the bare minimum when it came to cleaning and only changing pairs when I felt like it. Still most of my check-ups came back fine, so I carried on rebelling.
When I got fitted for the ACUVUE Oasys 1-Day with Hydraluxe lenses back in January, the kind optician told me that although my eyes were fine, not cleaning lenses properly and wearing the same pair for ages means that lipids can build up. This is why things can feel uncomfortable or dry if you’re on the computer a lot. At times I’d needed to finish work early because it was affecting my concentration and I would get frustrated. Things started to make sense when I had my assessment and I knew that I needed to start taking things more seriously.
All About ACUVUE Oasys 1-Day with Hydraluxe
I’ve been wearing the ACUVUE Oasys 1-Day with Hydraluxe lenses for the past two months and it’s been nice to have a fresh pair every day. They’re the perfect option if you’re a little bit lazy and they feel much lighter and easier to apply than my usual monthly pair. Thanks to the HydraLuxe™ technology, they’re designed to keep your eyes feeling comfortable throughout the day, especially if you’re always staring at a screen. There’s been a definite improvement when I’ve been at my coworking space and sometimes I’ll forget that I’m wearing them at the end of the day. I’ve often started getting ready for bed before suddenly thinking ‘Why can I still see?!’
The optician also mentioned that for good eye health, you should drink 4-6 glasses of water per day, take Omega 3 & 6 tablets and eat leafy greens/oily fish twice a week. Over the past few years I’ve upped my intake to help with general health and hair growth, but it’s interesting to know that it benefits my eyes as well. The ACUVUE Oasys 1-Day with Hydraluxe lenses also have the highest level of UV blocking available in a contact lens. It’s something I’d never really thought about before but in a similar way to skincare, sun protection is still needed for your eyes on cloudy and overcast days. I’ve just started using an SPF on my face regularly too, so it’s nice to keep things consistent.
One situation in which I find disposables useful (especially since I’ve just come back from Jamaica) is for holidays, as you don’t have to worry about packing solution and can throw away as you go. I’m also bit paranoid as a hotel maid in Florence once chucked a case away by accident and I had to improvise with two bottle lids. If you’re an eyecare commitment-phobe and don’t want to wear monthlies every day, then it may be worth just keeping a box spare for occasional use. My housemate Lucy wears glasses most days but always switches to lenses for the gym and doesn’t have to waste a monthly pair.
Please tell me that I’m not alone with my -7.50 prescription?! It’s definitely not as scary as it sounds and I always understand more about eye health with every check-up. It’s reassuring that things have settled down now as an adult.
If you need a bit of an eyecare MOT and are curious about trying the ACUVUE OASYS® 1-Day lenses, then make sure you investigate the free trial. The experience has definitely reminded me to take things more seriously. I take care of myself in every other way, but my eyecare habits were definitely lacking and I realised that I wasn’t invincible. Here’s to things feeling fresher throughout the day and not having to abandon my work early!
